Former student Catherine Aiken has spoken of her “courage” to keep her daughter in the family home despite the family’s financial difficulties and the family struggling financially to pay bills.

Ms Aiken was born in New South Wales and had lived in Canberra before moving to Sydney in 2011.

“I wanted to be there for her, so I thought, ‘OK, I can take her to Sydney’,” Ms Aiken said.

“The whole family has been really, really, very supportive and we’ve been able to provide a good lifestyle for her.”

She’s a very, very young child, but she’s also been very, really resilient.

“Ms Aikkens family has suffered financially as a result of the family and her daughter’s illness.”

It’s been a real struggle financially, she has had a lot of money, she’s been on disability payments, she had a few days off for Christmas, but we’ve had to cope with it all,” she said.
